Location accuracy is only useful when it leads to action
Location information is often treated as the headline feature, but it needs careful consideration. Wi-Fi, Bluetooth beacons and mobile network positioning can help in certain settings, although each has limitations.

Choosing a solution for your workforce
Start with the work, not the device catalogue. Review where people operate, whether they work at predictable times, the likelihood of violence or medical emergencies, and the consequences of delayed assistance. Include employees in this process. They will identify practical issues that are easy to miss from an office, such as poor mobile coverage at customer sites or the need to activate an alarm without removing work gloves.
The following questions usually clarify the specification:
Do staff require a discreet SOS alarm, or would a prominent alert act as a deterrent? Are they travelling in company vehicles, using their own cars or working mainly on foot? Is a 24/7 monitoring centre needed, or can trained managers provide dependable out-of-hours coverage? How will the organisation deal with locations where there is no mobile signal? And can the device data be brought into existing fleet, scheduling or operational systems without creating another reporting burden?
For a fleet-based workforce, connecting lone-worker protection to vehicle telematics can add valuable operational context. If a driver raises an alert, the control team may be able to see the vehicle’s last known position, route, journey status and nearby colleagues. This can speed up decision-making, particularly where the worker is unable to speak freely.

An alarm is only as good as the response process

Incident records should feed back into risk management. A successful rollout begins with a pilot involving representative users. Test devices in the locations where staff actually work, including areas with poor coverage, noisy environments and sites where gloves or protective clothing are worn. Check charging routines, alert speed, location performance and how easily supervisors can access information under pressure.
Training should be short, practical and repeated. Workers need to know when to activate an SOS alert, how welfare checks operate, what to do if a device is lost or damaged, and what response they can expect. Managers need a different level of training: they must understand escalation, incident recording and when to involve emergency services.
